Have you ever created an account for something because you just had to do it before you forgot it immediately? If you have a Microsoft account that matches this template-and that includes Xbox accounts-you might want to touch it quickly because, as of August 30, 2019, Microsoft will close any inactive account for two years.
The good news is that this policy is only intended to eliminate dead, duplicate or otherwise useless accounts. Outside of, you know, by logging in, there are a number of simple ways to prove and update the active status of your account. Even if you are a casual customer of Microsoft but want to keep your account, you should be clear.
As Microsoft explained in its new activity policy, maintaining a subscription or making any type of purchase will extend the active status of your account. So, if you're just using your Microsoft account for an annual subscription to Xbox Live or Microsoft Office or something like that, it's okay. You do not need to meticulously catalog the activity of your account. And even if your subscription expires, you'll have two years after the expiration date until you close your account.
Likewise, your Microsoft account will never be closed until you have an unspent balance or unpaid credit. So if you have money on your account, or if Microsoft owes you money for a refund or what you have, your account will be charged. And if you have a family account with one or more subaccounts, the main account will not be closed until at least one subaccount is active. If the owner of this account loses his time in the sub-account's minor program, the two-year countdown will begin to trigger on the primary account. This should only apply to parents whose children are playing Xbox and, when they stop being minors, these kids will probably have created their own account anyway.
These are the most relevant exceptions, but if you happen to post something via the Microsoft Store or obtain a certification via Microsoft, your account will also remain active indefinitely (unless there are really strange legal issues do occur). You can check the status of your account and see how much time you have left before the hourglass runs out via the Microsoft Account Management page. If you do not even know where you are, take a look at it just to be safe.
