We know since June that Microsoft was working on the integration of Alexa and Google Assistant at Xbox instead of its own voice assistant, Cortana. Alexa support is already operational on Xbox One, it is time that Google Assistant launches into the action.

Harrison Hoffman, Senior Program Manager at Xbox, presented Reddit this morning with the public beta of Xbox Action for Google Assistant. The program would allow Xbox users to control their consoles using voice commands by calling Google Assistant on their favorite Android (or iOS) devices or their home speakers.

All English speaking customers can sign up to test the service today. Just follow these steps:

  1. Join the beta group of the Xbox Assistant for Google with the Google Account you want to use.
  2. Sign in to your Xbox
  3. In the Google Home app for iOS or Android:
    • Press "+ Add"
    • Tap "Set up device"
    • Press "Have you already configured something?
    • Find and select "[beta] Xbox "
  4. Sign in with the Microsoft account that you use on Xbox.
  5. Follow the instructions to link your Xbox and give it a device name

Once your Xbox One console and your Google assistant are associated, you should be able to control your Xbox One console by saying "Hey Google" followed by one of the following commands:

  • "turn on the Xbox"
  • "turn off the Xbox"
  • "pause on Xbox"
  • "CV on Xbox"
  • "volume increase on Xbox"
  • "take a screenshot on Xbox"

The beta version of Xbox Action for Google Assistant is available to all English-speaking customers. Google and Xbox plan to expand language support before the service leaves the beta later this fall.
