Microsoft today begins testing a new 4K dashboard for the Xbox Series X. Xbox insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead Ring will have access to the increased resolution of the Xbox Dashboard later today, designed to improve user interface elements for 4K displays.
“This change means that the home, guide and other areas of the user interface will be displayed in a higher native resolution for increased clarity and text readability,” said Microsoft’s Xbox test team. .
Until this new 4K dashboard, Xbox Series X consoles were running dashboard UI elements at 1080p. Native 4K elements for the home, guide, and other parts of the dashboard will dramatically improve the look of the Xbox Series X on 4K TVs.
It’s not yet clear whether HDR will be supported as part of this new resolution as well, and whether the Xbox Series S will see improvements to its dashboard resolution as well. The smaller Xbox Series S can technically output in 4K, so there’s a chance this console will experience some dashboard upgrades as well.
These new Xbox dashboard changes come just days after Microsoft also started testing a new night mode for various Xbox consoles. The new Night Mode allows Xbox owners to dim their screens, the brightness of the controller’s LEDs, and even the Xbox power button. The 4K dashboard and night mode are expected to start rolling out to all Xbox Series X consoles later this year.
