PlayStation 5 can, in fact, play a handful of PlayStation 2 titles – but only those that have been ported to the PlayStation 4, like Jak & Daxter and Grand Theft Auto 3. Oddly, the Xbox Series X | S can play retro PlayStation titles a lot better – at least, until the inevitable batch of ban and disclaimer letters are posted.
Modern Vintage Gamer has been showing just how versatile Microsoft’s new machine has been for a few weeks now, and these PS2 videos are particularly impressive. They use an open source emulation application named RetroArch, which runs as a Universal Windows Platform client through the console development environment.
It’s not perfect – there are visual and audio issues, as you would expect from an amateur emulation like this – but it’s good enough to make us wonder why the hell Sony didn’t. not released its own emulator. Obviously the licensing issues make reselling retro titles a real headache, but we’re sure people would pay extra for the privilege of playing their old PS2 discs.
