The New Year is going to be a big one for Xbox and Bethesda, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer is already marveling at what that means for the number of games his company can make.
Spencer spoke about the ongoing acquisition of Bethesda and what it means for Xbox in the latest Xbox podcast. While the case was announced in September, it will actually only close for a while this year, and the two companies will continue to operate separately until then. Even so, Spencer seems confident that there won’t be any hiccups along the way.
“2021 is when we get the final approval, I feel really good,” Spencer said. “Everything is on the right track. Then we’ll start to really come up with some of the planning that we can do with them. At the moment, we’re really in contact with them as they continue to do the work they do. do, because you don’t have them yet. “
Spencer added that he was particularly excited about Starfield, as well as the many other projects – some announced, some not – that are underway in Bethesda. They “will be an incredible addition to our studios” once the deal is done and they all start working together as one company, Spencer added.
“When I think of our RPG ability with Obsidian, with inXile, with the work that Playground is doing that’s now out there with Fable, obviously, and with what Bethesda can do, it’s a huge ability. I’m thinking of our FPS capability with id and obviously 343 and the work we can do. This doubles the size of our first party studios when Bethesda joins, which is pretty amazing to think of. “
