Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra camera display is the latest example of a spec masquerading as a feature

Xiaomi is working on a premium version of its new Mi 11, and if an early practical leak from YouTuber Tech Buff PH is genuine (and it appears to be), the Mi 11 Ultra is all about the camera.

This is not surprising. All the best Android phones get a big update in the camera department over the previous year’s model, and camera functionality is one of those things you may see. in any sort of output presentation. We often have the impression that the telephone is secondary and companies try to sell us cameras that can connect to the Internet.

But no one in their right mind has ever asked what we see in the camera department in the practical Mi 11 Ultra: a giant camera hump with three high mega-pixel cameras, a trio of what appear to be camera flashes, and a 1-inch AMOLED display that mirrors the front screen (or launches its own app, if you like that).

Why? I understand the triple lens part. One is said to be periscopic with a zoom up to 120x and the other is probably wide angle or macro or something, while the third is supposed to be the right regular camera used when you don’t want to watch. in the windows.

But this rear display is just plain silly. I can think of a lot of bad things to say about it, but I’ll stick to the first two that instantly occurred to me when I first saw it: the screen will increase the cost. of the device a lot, and the best part about the Mi 11 is its under $ 1,000 price point. And at arm’s length – like when you take a selfie – you won’t be able to see anything on that postage stamp-sized screen, which will reduce its usefulness.

When the Mi 11 Ultra is announced, Xiaomi has the opportunity to tell us why we need it.

I see no reason why it would even be anything other than using it to frame a selfie taken through the rear camera lens instead of the really good 20MP selfie camera that came with the original Mi 11. Maybe you could take a 120x zoom photo of your fillings to send to your dentist or something, but I think the front camera and a screen you can see are going to take better selfies than anyone else. which rear lenses through a small viewfinder.

I’m sure Xiaomi will tell us all the use cases for this thing once the company makes the phone official. But I bet most people will be scratching their heads wondering how much this screen adds to the cost of the phone.

It’s such a shame, because the rest of the phone’s specs look great. 67W charging, 4K HDR recording, night mode for video and 5000mAh battery. It even has a QHD + 120Hz screen. Too bad everything is attached to some sort of parasitic bump on the back with an unnecessarily small mirror of the actual screen that you’ll end up using.
