Xiaomi Mi 9 - Device on the table

The Xiaomi Mi 8 was announced for the first time less than a year ago, at the end of May 2018. According to our full review, we found that the Mi 8 was offering a material , an impressive design and specifications for a phone representing about half the price of most flagship devices. We also discussed its obvious similarities with the Apple iPhone X, launched several months ago.

Less than a year later, the Xiaomi Mi 9 has arrived. Let's see what's different between the two.

As we mentioned, the Xiaomi Mi 8 looks a lot like the iPhone X, with a large screen at the top of the screen, although many phones now look like Apple's flagship product. You get a drink at the back and front with this phone, with an aluminum body. It's not really revolutionary, but it's still very pretty.

In comparison, the Xiaomi Mi 9 looks much more innovative. It has a curved glass in the back coated with Gorilla Glass 5 and is presented in a nice blue, black or purple, with what Xiaomi calls a "holographic" gradient. He looks very futuristic and brilliant. The Mi 9 also leaves out the large notch of the front camera in favor of a much smaller dewdrop notch on the top. You also have a dedicated digital assistant button, which can be used to activate Google Assistant anywhere, but in China, where the local XiaoAI will be used.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 had a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,248 x 1,080 and an aspect ratio of 18.7: 9, covered with Gorilla Glass 5. As noted earlier, the screen of this phone has a large notch. The Mi 9 has a larger screen, with an AMOLED screen of 6.39 inches, a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and a display ratio of 18.5: 9. It is also protected with the new Gorilla Glass 6 .

Although the standard Mi 8 does not have a built-in fingerprint sensor, the Mi 8 Pro, or Explorer Edition, has this feature. In contrast, the Mi 9 and its transparent edition both have built-in fingerprint sensors.

Xiaomi Mi 9 vs Mi 8: Computer Hardware and Software

When the Xiaomi Mi 8 was announced with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, this chip had already been included in a number of phones. However, the fast processing time of the Xiaomi Mi 9 will make it one of the first phones to use the latest and fastest Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 855.

The Mi 8 standard had 6GB of RAM, with built-in 64GB and 128GB storage options. The Mi 9 standard also uses 6GB for its cheapest version in China, but dramatically increases storage capacity to 128GB , completely abandoning the 64GB model. The Mi 9 will also be sold with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Global versions with 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage will be sold outside of China.

The Mi 8 has a battery of 3400 mAh, and the Mi 9 reduces it to 3300 mAh. However, it more than compensates for this difference with two characteristics. First, there is a new fast charging technology in the Mi 9 called Turbo Charge. If you connect the phone to your power outlet with the optional charger supported, Charge Turbo will support up to 27 W. The Mi 9 will charge at full capacity in just 1 hour and 4 minutes with Turbo Charge, according to Xiaomi. However, this special charger is an additional option; the phone comes with an 18W charger in the box.

The other novelty lies in the fact that the Mi 9 supports not only wireless charging, but also a version of Turbo Charge technology. If you get the special Charge Turbo wireless pad, you can charge the Mi 9 at 100% in just 1 hour and 40 minutes, with its 20W support. Wireless charging is convenient, but it is also usually much lower than standard wired charging hardware. This new wireless charging technology reduces this gap much more slowly, but again, you'll need Xiaomi's special charger for faster speeds.

While the Mi 8 was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo, the Mi 9 comes with Android 9 Pie. The Mi 8 and Mi 9 interfaces both have a MIUI 10 interface from Xiaomi.

Xiaomi Mi 9 vs Mi 8: Camera

The triple camera of the Xiaomi Mi 9

The biggest difference between the Xiaomi Mi 8 and the Mi 9 lies in the camera hardware. The Mi 8 had a dual camera, with a 12 MP main sensor with an f / 1.8 aperture, and a 12 MP secondary telephoto sensor with an f / 2.4 aperture. The Mi 9 is jumping to a triple rear camera design. The main sensor goes up to 48MP, with its Sony IMX586 camera hardware. By default, this camera takes 12MP images, but you can manually switch it to full 48MP support. There is also a 12MP 2x optical zoom lens with an f / 2.2 aperture, and finally an ultra-wide 16MP sensor with a 117-degree field of view and an f / 2.2 aperture.

The Mi 8 and Mi 9 are equipped with 20MP front cameras with f / 2.0 aperture. The camera of the Mi 8 has 1.8 micron pixels, while that of the Mi 9 goes down to 0.9 micron.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 is also released in a special edition "Explorer Edition", also called Mi 8 Pro outside of China. In addition to increasing memory from 6GB of RAM to 8GB and storage to 128GB, this version of the phone incorporates a built-in fingerprint sensor (now standard on the Mi 9). Its back was also designed to be transparent, but it was actually an optical illusion that made you think you were looking at the hardware of your phone (although the NFC chip is real). It's still pretty effective. Finally, this version also has a function of unlocking face in 3D, with its infrared sensor.

The Mi 9 also takes a transparent edition, but it goes from 6 GB to 8 GB of RAM and 12 GB of RAM. There is also 256 GB of storage. The "transparent" back of the phone is again essentially fake. There is no indication of a 3D unlock sensor. This version of the phone is only sold in China, at least for the moment.
