Earlier today, Xiaomi unveiled a handful of new devices, including the Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11 Lite series, Mi 11i and Mi Band 6. The company also unveiled a device exclusively available in China: the Mi 11 Pro. It is similar to the Mi 11 Ultra but costs a little less. When announcing the Mi 11 Pro, however, Xiaomi spent some time detailing a few new wireless charging accessories that caught our attention. One of them is a ridiculously fast 80W wireless charging stand, while the other is the Apple AirPower clone you might have been expecting.
Xiaomi 80W Mi Wireless Charging Stand Set
Called the “Mi Wireless Charging Stand Set”, this wireless charging accessory promises speeds of up to 80W. For reference, Xiaomi’s fastest wireless charging products, currently the Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra, support wireless charging up to 67 W. This means that this accessory will be a bit out of date. test of time, which is good to know given how quickly we are seeing advancements in wireless charging technology.
Xiaomi says that the Mi wireless charging stand assembly has a curved air duct for high efficiency heat dissipation. It also has a dual coil design to allow horizontal and vertical use. There’s even a dedicated button to activate a faster charging mode that speeds up charging up to 15%. Many phones like the OnePlus 9 Pro have a toggle in the software to slow down the wireless charger, so it’s interesting to see that Xiaomi offers a hardware button here.
In China, the 80W wireless charger costs ¥ 499 (~ $ 76), which is quite expensive for a wireless charger. However, it comes with a 120W power supply in the box, which makes it very good value for money. Xiaomi also sells an “eco-friendly” version that doesn’t come with a charger in the box, and they also sell a “Special Edition” bundle that adds ¥ 199 on top of the Mi 11 Pro. Xiaomi says there are “a limited number” of products, so it’s unclear how long it will be sold in China or if it will soon be shipped outside the region.
Xiaomi’s version of Apple AirPower
Next is Xiaomi’s Multi-Coil Fast Wireless Charger, which many media have dubbed an AirPower clone. It’s not without a guarantee, however, as Xiaomi itself admits to having started development 2 years ago, which is the same time Apple shut down AirPower. For those who don’t know, AirPower was supposed to be an Apple-made wireless charging mat that can charge up to 3 devices simultaneously. It never came out, of course, which embarrassed Apple a lot.
Xiaomi’s take on AirPower involves 19 charging coils and a motor that can silently move the coils to start inductively charging your device. It can wirelessly charge 3 devices simultaneously at a maximum speed of 20W each, for a total of 60W. In China, it costs ¥ 599 (~ $ 91), but nothing is known about global availability.
