Xiaomi’s global shipments overtake Apple for second place – TechCrunch

A record quarter for Xiaomi helped the Chinese mobile phone company grab second place in global smartphone shipments, according to second quarter figures recently released by research firm Canalys. That’s pretty amazing growth for the company, up 83% year-over-year for the quarter and capturing 17% of the global market.

The skyrocketing places Xiaomi at No. 2 in the world, behind just 19% of Samsung by a relatively small margin. Apple is third at 14% (after its own solid growth has slowed), while other Chinese manufacturers Oppo and Vivo round out the top five with 10% each.

Huawei, of course, isn’t among the top companies anywhere. That’s a pretty massive drop, due in large part to the blacklist which both excluded the company from certain markets (namely the US) and cut access to US mobile products, including Android from Google and various applications.

Canalys cites aggressive pricing as a big factor in Xiaomi’s success – especially in contrast to premium priced offerings from Samsung and Apple.

“It is now transforming its business model from challenger to incumbent, with initiatives such as the consolidation of channel partners and more careful management of older stocks in the open market,” said the firm’s chief research officer. analysts Ben Stanton in a statement. “However, it remains largely mass-market oriented, and compared to Samsung and Apple, its average selling price is about 40% and 75% cheaper, respectively. So a top priority for Xiaomi this year is to increase sales of its high-end devices, such as the Mi 11 Ultra.

The company is certainly not a household name in the United States (the company has addressed its own issues here), but it has recently seen particular success in Latin America, Africa and Western Europe. It seems there are still plenty of markets available for further expansion as it looks to take on Samsung, although Oppo and Vivo hope to continue their own respective rapid global growth.
