Xiaomi today announced its entry into the world of smart glasses (not AR glasses) with the most marketing post of all time. Before we dive into the technical details of the laptop, I want everyone to know that the company describes this as a “engineering mindset to create a future point of view. Yeah.
Xiaomi smart glasses have a 0.13 inch MircoLED display on one of the lenses. The company says it uses “optical waveguide technology “- which refracts light 180 degrees – to display content, such as notifications and navigation aid, on the screen. The glasses have a built-in 2.4mm x 2.02mm display chip in frame. It is quite small.
The Chinese tech giant said the screen uses a monochrome mode in sunlight with a brightness of 2 million nits for better visibility. He said optical waveguide technology allows him to reduce the size and weight (51 grams) of the frame and make it look like an ordinary pair.
The glasses can be paired with your phone to show you details of incoming calls and notifications. However, it can also independently show you real-time navigation and text translation information.
Xiaomi smart glasses come with a single 5 megapixel camera to take photos, videos and help you translate text on signs. In contrast, Facebook and Ray-Ban glasses have two 5-megapixel cameras.
The company said you will have to use its XiaoAi AI Assistant as the main method of interaction. You will also find touch controls on the frame, but Xiaomi has yet to specify exactly what they are used for.
All of this gives the impression that Xiaomi is trying to emulate the vision of Google Glass, instead of going Instant glasses /Facebook x Ray-Ban way. Sounds good, but there’s no launch date or price yet – just an “engineering mindset”.
Although the product looks technically cool, no one can experience it. For now, it looks like Xiaomi is ticking the “we launched this before Apple” box. It would have been nice to have an explorer or developer edition, so that we could at least allow some people to use the laptop in real conditions.
