Molina injured his thumb on Sunday against the Braves and tried to cross it to Philadelphia earlier this week. But he had struggled to hold the bat since then and was no longer in training in the last two games.

The Cardinals activated receiver Andrew Knizner of Triple-A Memphis to take over. Matt Wieters remains for the moment. Knizner, a 24-year-old rookie, is the club's number 2 pipeline candidate and has played 37 games for Memphis, while beating .286 with five homers, 17 RBIs and eight doubles.

This is the sixth time Molina has been on the injured list in her 16-year Major League career.
