Yale has canceled the admission for a student whose family would have paid $ 1.2 million to bring her in, announced the school on Tuesday as part of what is considered the first gesture of this type of a US college since the beginning of the admissions scandal.
The decision came two weeks after dozens of parents, coaches and university administrators were indicted in the massive swindle that led to university admission.
As part of the scandal, Yale's former women's football coach, Rudy Meredith, was accused of accepting bribes in exchange for the nomination of two candidates as football recruits for admission.
According to the school, one candidate was rejected despite the endorsement of Meredith, but the other was admitted.
"Yale investigated the allegations and the admission of the student who received a fraudulent endorsement was canceled," the school said in a statement posted on its website.
The school did not reveal the identity of the student because of federal privacy laws and university policy.
According to the indictment, the family of the admitted student had paid $ 1.2 million to William "Rick" Singer, the leader in the operation of admission, who had sent Meredith a check for $ 400,000.
In exchange, the coach helped to present her falsely as a competitive football player, including lying that she was co-captain of a leading football club.
In a letter sent Tuesday, Peter Salovey, president of Yale, said the school had confirmed that "all students enrolled in Yale admitted with sports support played at least one season in their sports team," at the same time. Except for the student whose admission was canceled. .
In the future, all future students who will receive the endorsement of a coach will see their athletic credentials confirmed by the sports department, Salovey said.
Yale said Tuesday that the Ministry of Education had launched a preliminary investigation of the college and seven other schools as part of the scandal.
