Yamaha’s new B20 (SR-B20A) and C20 (SR-C20A) soundbars promise maximum performance in a minimum footprint. They were, the company says, designed to fit any space without sacrificing sound or specifications.
The B20 (£ 249) is the more advanced of the two new models, based on the same DTS Virtual: X technology as that of the Yamaha YAS-207, a current What Hi-Fi? Prize winner.
The DTS codec aims to virtually simulate the sound delivered by a 7.1.4 setup, and our experience with the technology inside the soundbars has been only positive – which bodes well for the new B20. Could we consider a new sound bar at the best price? Very probably.
Two tweeters, woofers and subwoofers each trigger from its 91cm wide and 5cm high chassis, which houses HDMI ARC and optical inputs (two), a subwoofer output and a Bluetooth receiver.
Yamaha’s Clear Voice mode – said to be a customer favorite – is built in to improve dialog clarity, while a handful of sound settings (stereo, standard, movie and game) also allow for customization.
The C20 (£ 219), meanwhile, goes without DTS Virtual: X, though it does have Dolby Digital and Virtual Surround processing to help its dual full-range speakers, woofer, and dual passive radiators. to extract the sound of its 60 cm wide and 6 cm. high frame.
HDMI ARC – not a given at this price – and two optical inputs can be found next to a mini input for game consoles and other portable devices, while Bluetooth is also present and decent. He also shares clear voice and four sound modes with his brother.
Not only are the Yamaha B20 and C20 modest in size to easily clamp onto a shelf or TV stand, they can also be wall mounted via the built-in keyholes, with no additional brackets needed.
The new Yamaha soundbars will be available in early fall, so we hope to have the pleasure of their company in our test rooms very soon. Australian pricing and availability has yet to be announced.
