The Yankees outfielder continues to drop like flies, but savegames from the backups still contributed to a win on Sunday.
A day after Tim Locastro tore up his ACL, Trey Amburgey left a 9-1 victory over the Red Sox with what the Yankees called a hamstring cramp after trying to beat a double play to end the the fourth round.
The Yankees had another scare in the next half-inning when Ryan LaMarre – who was called up earlier on Sunday as Locastro was placed on the injured list – fell after unsuccessfully trying to catch the right-field wall . He hit the wall and then landed awkwardly on his left leg, but after two coaches and Aaron Boone visited, he stayed in the game.
The reconfigured outfield of LaMarre, Greg Allen and Brett Gardner (who replaced Amburgey) brought the Yankees offense to life, combining to go 4-on-7 with three RBIs, five runs and two stolen goals.
LaMarre went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a steal, Allen went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and steal, and Gardner added a single to lead a four-run seventh inning.
“After the last time I came back for four days and injured my hamstring so early I said to Booney, ‘I’m not going out of the game,'” said LaMarre, who has been in three games. in May before going on IL and then being crossed off the list. “You don’t have too many opportunities to wear stripes, so I want to take advantage of every sleeve given to me.”
As for Amburgey, Boone said Yankees medical staff are still assessing whether it was a hamstring cramp or a low grade strain. He wasn’t sure if the Yankees would need to step for another outfielder.
So far, the Yankees have used 13 outfielders this season, with Amburgey, Allen and Hoy Park among the most recent. Locastro, a July 1 commercial acquisition, had been another recent addition, but was injured on Saturday while making a seizure jumping into foul territory. Locastro joined Aaron Judge (COVID), Aaron Hicks (end of season wrist surgery), Clint Frazier (vision) and Miguel Andujar (wrist) on the IL.
LaMarre got the call on Sunday to replace Locastro instead of former prospect Estevan Florial, with Boone saying the more experienced LaMarre “gives us the best chance in the short term”.
Florial, the 23-year-old southpaw, continues to struggle for goals and strikeouts, although he scored twice on Friday for Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre.
“He’s doing fine,” Boone said. “The most important thing for him is [staying] healthy and get those regular reps. He certainly had some ups and downs there, but the most important thing was that he was able to play regularly. I hope he is in reserve for a big second half.
