BOSTON – There’s a “good chance” that Giancarlo Stanton will play in the outfield at some point in the Yankees’ next series against the Red Sox, Aaron Boone said on MLB Network Radio on Thursday.
Stanton hasn’t appeared in the outfield since 2019 as the Yankees tried to avoid injuries to the slugger, who suffered from lower-body illnesses for much of his time in the Bronx.
He didn’t play on the outfield when the Yankees were in Philadelphia for a pair of games in June.
At the time, Stanton and Boone pointed to the series that the Yankees are expected to play next week in Miami as a likely return to the field, but the team facing a serious lack of depth in the outfield due to injuries. and COVID-19, the timeline for using Stanton more than just DH could be increased.
Stanton last played on the outfield in Game 1 of the 2019 ALCS, then sat until Game 5 with a straight quad stretched in that series, which the Yankees lost in six games to the Astros.
If Stanton can play on the outfield, it would allow the Yankees to use Gary Sanchez as a DH on occasion.
Stanton had a single RBI in Wednesday’s win over the Phillies at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees begin a four-game winning streak at Fenway Park, where they start a four-game streak against the Red Sox on Thursday, followed by a three-game streak at Tampa Bay starting Monday. It’s a stretch that will go a long way in determining whether the Yankees will be a factor in the AL East race.
