The Yankees have been one of the hottest teams in baseball recently. You could argue that they were the hottest. If they weren’t number one, they were probably number two behind the Atlanta Braves, who they coincidentally faced in a two-game set starting Monday night.
Like the Yankees, the Braves entered this game as well on a nine-game winning streak and had lost just three times during the entire month of August. While the opener only lasted a while, it turned out that was often the case during the Yankees’ recent run. The offense did enough and the bullpen managed to seal a victory. Thanks to a three-RBI game from Giancarlo Stanton, a strong start from Jordan Montgomery and a lightning-quick relief effort, the Yankees extended their winning streak to 10 with a 5-1 victory over the Braves.
Stanton started his day and opened the scoring by reminding us how strong he is. Despite producing a swing that looked like this, he hit a 387-foot ball for a solo shot to give the Yankees the lead in the second inning.
However, the advance will not last that long. Dansby Swanson led the lower half of the second and hit his own solo homer, tying the score.
After that, the game turned into a pitching duel. Huascar Ynoa mainly mowed the Yankees roster after the Stanton homeroom. Montgomery wasn’t the sharpest he had ever been, emitting four walks, but did a good job limiting hits and keeping Atlanta off the board.
The stalemate was finally broken on the sixth, and it’s still thanks to Stanton. He walked up to the plate with two ons: DJ LeMahieu, who was hit by a pitch, and Joey Gallo, who walked. Stanton then scored a brace in left field. Not only did LeMahieu score, but the speed at which he hit the wall caused a play error, also allowing Gallo to come home.
Montgomery had lightly flirted with danger all day, and after the Yankees took the lead, his day was over and Jonathan Loaisiga came on. Montgomery allowed a run on two hits and four walks in five innings, removing two holds on holds.
After two good Loaisiga innings, the Yankees got some insurance points in the eighth. The first two hitters of the inning fell in order before Aaron Judge kept the inning alive with a single. Gallo and pinch-hitting Luke Voit then both took steps to charge the bases and bring Gary Sánchez to bat. The Yankees wide receiver hit a single in the infield to score two more runs.
In the bottom of the eighth, Wandy Peralta worked around two hits, thanks to a timely double play and a big strikeout from Swanson. It was then handed over to Aroldis Chapman for the ninth. Chapman completed a 1-2-3 inning to seal the game and victory.
Double-digit winning streaks don’t happen that often. The Yankees played some great baseball, were lucky, but most of all, they made it count.
