Yankees reliever Brooks Kriske wishes he could turn back time.
Kriske became the first pitcher in Yankees history to throw four or more wild shots in a single inning when he blew up the Yankees’ lead in a 5-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox. After the match, he was sent back to Triple-A with no corresponding move announced.
“Just pure execution,” Kriske told reporters. “It’s part of the game. Obviously I have to do a better job. I want to be someone the team can count on in the big spots. It’s something that I’m going to have to do better… It sucks to be the one who will ruin everything for the team.
To start the tenth inning, the 27-year-old had Rafael Devers in second. Devers moved up to third place after the first wild pitch. The next wild throw sent Devers home to tie the game at 4.
Kriske then made Xander Bogaerts walk before moving him to third place on his third and fourth wild throws. The nail in the coffin was a sack fly to Hunter Renfroe’s right field.
The last row of stats for Kriske was a hit, run and strikeout with all four of his wild shots in a single inning. His ERA climbed to 10.80 after the failed save.
“It was just one of those nights that I wasn’t performing,” said Kriske, who claimed his first career victory Wednesday night against the Phillies.
“It’s not fun. There are a lot of guys fighting butt and it sucks being the one blowing it up for the team.
The relievers’ problems extend far beyond Kriske.
Chad Green allowed two runs on five hits in the ninth inning for his second missed save. Jonathan Loaisiga and Nector Cortes are currently on the COVID-19 injured list, and Zack Britton has just returned from injury.
Aroldis Chapman has apparently returned to his usual form, but the southpaw had pitched the previous two nights in wins over the Phillies.
“In this baseball streak where we’ve won a lot of games, we’ve had some incredibly tough losses like tonight,” said manager Aaron Boone after the Yankees’ four-game winning streak ended. “Time and time again the guys have bounced back. This is what we expect to do [Friday]. “
