Yankees explain how Domingo German went from feeling ‘phenomenal’ to IL in 12 hours

MIAMI – Only the Yankees. Even with Anthony Rizzo now in the lineup and making Brian Cashman a genius all weekend long, that old bugaboo struck again on Sunday.

Before the Yankees straddled Rizzo again late for a 3-1 win over the Marlins to complete a sweep, pitcher Domingo German was placed on the 10-day injured list with an inflamed right shoulder.

It’s never a surprise when a Yankee enters the IL because there have been non-stop injuries three seasons in a row, but this one was odd.

After the German left on Saturday night, a two-run, four-innings outing in which he left for a pinched hitter in the fifth with bases loaded and the game tied, the Dominican said in his interview with ‘post-game he “felt phenomenal there.

So how did German end up on the IL 12 hours later?

“He had a little pain in his shoulder after he left (last Sunday in Boston), then (Saturday) night when he got home he felt it a little bit, a little (Sunday) morning,” said manager Aaron Boone. . “Then we’ll see.”

The Yankees will likely find out how serious the problem is on Monday when the German gets an MRI.

“I don’t want to speculate too much on this, but (the discomfort) has been there enough to say something,” Boone said. “So we’ll find out this week. “

Depending on the MRI results, German could be sidelined for a few weeks or maybe done for the year.

The German has only had a mediocre season with a 4-4 record with a 4.45 ERA in 21 games, including 18 starts, but has dropped to 2.81 since the all-star break in four games , the last two of which were departures.

On July 25, the German was leading 4-0 and working on a hit before the end of the eighth at Fenway Park. A brace from Alex Verdugo ended the German’s day, then Jonathan Loaisiga stepped into the game and Boston scored five points to take the lead to a stunning 5-4 victory.

This disappointment for the German now probably doesn’t compare to his shoulder problems.

The German’s rotation spot will be filled by left-hander Nestor Cortes, who was heading into intermediate relief duties with the Yankees trading to left-hander Andrew Heaney on Friday just before the 4 p.m. trade deadline.

Heaney will make his Yankees debut Monday night at Yankee Stadium in an opening game against the Baltimore Orioles.

With the German sidelined, the Yankees have 14 players on the IL. For the season, the Yankees sent 25 players to the IL for 34 stints.
