BALTIMORE – Maybe the shortstop isn’t the problem for Gleyber Torres.
Torres’ struggles on the pitch continued on Tuesday night at second base, when he missed a potential double play ball late in the sixth inning in a 7-2 win over the Orioles.
He mishandled a routine Grounder by Ramon Urias and still had a chance to get Austin Hays second for strength, but his throw to Gio Urshela was inaccurate and Baltimore had runners in first and second and no one was got out.
Nonetheless, Michael King allowed Pedro Severino to strike a blow at Torres, who got strength in second place and turned the double play.
He was taken out for defensive substitute Tyler Wade in the bottom of the eighth, with Wade in short, Urshela in third and DJ LeMahieu in second.
“There were just a few things that I decided to get him out of there tonight,” Aaron Boone said of the late change. “It was good to see him bounce back after the custom double play and on the next play make a good play on a ball.”
Ahead of the game, Torres said he was open to the move Boone announced on Monday, with Torres going from short to second – with DJ LeMahieu from second to third and Urshela getting time short.
Torres said he was “ready to do whatever the team needs” for the rest of 2021 and into the future.
“The way I played the first two years of my career, playing second, I did two all-star games,” Torres said. “If I have to come back in shorts next season, I will be available. Otherwise, I’ll stay second and do my thing like the last two years.
That’s what the Yankees are trying to bring him back to – and less like the lower defenseman and below average hitter he’s been in each of the past two seasons.
Torres said he was not upset with the move.
“It’s all for the team,” said Torres. “I make too many mistakes [at short]. With where we are right now [in the standings], we cannot make mistakes. I feel good about switching to the second. I want to be part of the team and I will try to play better.
