Yankees pitcher named injured list after ‘freak accident’

The New York Yankees have had a strange season – and Michael King’s arrival on the injured list due to an “freak accident” he suffered in the weight room is just one reminder of that.

King was on the injured list for 10 days on Thursday with a contusion to his right middle finger.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters King had his finger stuck between two weights, according to the New York Post. He said King tried to play wrestling ahead of New York’s game against the Seattle Mariners, but the results didn’t go as he had hoped.

Boone previously mentioned King as a potential starter for Friday’s game against the Houston Astros.

The 26-year-old right-hander has played 14 games for New York this season, making six starts. He has a 3.72 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 48 1/3 inning.

New York has recalled Tyler Wade to replace him on the main roster.

That’s not the only odd issue the Yankees rotation has faced this week.

Domingo German was due to start on Wednesday, but he underwent emergency root canal treatment, which scratched him early on against the Mariners. Nick Nelson took his place on the mountain that day.

The Yankees being their last streak before the All-Star break on Friday against Houston. New York is 44-42 so far this year and is nine games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East.
