ST. PETERSBURG, Fla .– It took the most recent Yankee to achieve its greatest success.
Rougned Odor, playing his first game since joining a rally from Rangers, delivered an RBI single with two runs in the 10th inning on Sunday to lead in the winning inning before the Yankees retreated to an 8-4 win. on the Rays.
He broke a three-game losing streak and came after the Yankees had many previous opportunities to take the lead – and failed.
Aaron Judge started 10th in the second and Aaron Hicks was grazed on the leg by a throw from Collin McHugh. Mike Tauchman broke runners for Gleyber Torres.
With the infield, Torres failed and Willy Adames easily threw Judge at the plate.
Just as it looked like the Yankees were on the verge of wasting another opportunity, Odor – nominated for an assignment by the Rangers ahead of Opening Day – delivered his first blow as the Yankee to score Hicks.
Gary Sanchez followed with a scoring single to make it 6-4 and Gio Urshela then came up with his fourth hit of the day, an RBI single to the right that also scored Sanchez when Manuel Margot let the ball go through him.
Albert Abreu, barely recalled from the alternative site, ended the match with a scoreless bottom from 10th.
Ahead of the game, Aaron Boone insisted his roster was on the verge of exiting despite some recent poor performances.
“If the guys that we have, as talented as they are, regularly go up there to string up some good batsmen, I promise you the results will be there,” said Boone. “And someone will have to pay for the fights this first week.”
This turned out to be the Rays – at least in the 10th.
A round earlier, the Yankees bats were still lost as they found a way not to score in a wild top of the ninth.
Urshela started the inning with a hard ground ball in the middle that an Adames diver deflected into right field, allowing Urshela to move up to second for a brace.
Brett Gardner didn’t bunt Urshela in the third and instead worked a walk.
DJ LeMahieu then hit a Grounder in the third to force Urshela, but Kevin Padlo’s throwing error saw Gardner go third and LeMahieu take second.
With the judge at the plate, Diego Castillo bounced off a pitch and Gardner started to come home, but wide receiver Mike Zunino caught him out of the air and Gardner got caught in a recap for the second out.
Judge followed by a short failure to end the threat.
Torres had equalized with a single RBI in the eighth, but the Yankees’ struggles with runners in goal continued.
The back-and-forth play also presented some drama, as warnings were issued at both benches after Jordan Montgomery pierced Austin Meadows in the shoulder at the bottom of the first inning.
Montgomery then hit Meadows again, this time on the left wrist, with two outs and no one on the fifth. The refs met, but let Montgomery stay in the game.
It was the fourth time in this series that a Rays hitter had been hit with a pitch.
Montgomery also put the Yankees in a hole in the second.
He gave Mike Brosseau a starting single and after a pair of steals Zunino crushed a 3-2 change in the left seats to give the Rays a 2-0 lead.
It was short-lived as Tampa Bay first player Brent Honeywell Jr. was retired after two perfect innings in his MLB debut and replaced by ex-Met Michael Wacha.
The first four Wacha Yankees faced base, Urshela threw a two-point shot down the center that traveled about 453 feet, scoring Gary Sanchez to tie the game at 2-2.
Gardner hit on a field single and moved to third place on LeMahieu’s rule double on the right. A march towards Judge charged up the bases for Hicks, who ran aground in a double play.
This scored Gardner, but helped Wacha escape the inning as he then moved Giancarlo Stanton up to third to keep him 3-2.
Wacha struck out the last nine batters he faced before being replaced by Cody Reed to start the seventh.
