Yankees still have a decision to make

TAMPA – General manager Brian Cashman has said the Yankees have just one decision to make before opening day on Thursday – and pitcher will replace Justin Wilson after officially putting the southpaw on the roster. injured with a tight shoulder.

Cashman said Monday in the Yankees’ spring training final, a 5-2 loss to the Tigers at George M. Steinbrenner Field, that Tyler Wade had been on the squad, along with right-hander Michael King.

Mike Tauchman, treating a wound in his right shin after fouling a ball on Sunday, will also be on the list of 26 players.

The inclusion of Wade and King were no real surprises, despite neither having a particularly strong spring.

The Yankees continue to value Wade’s defensive versatility. He can play all four positions on the court, as well as the outside court, and is their best option to fill in at shortstop if they are without Gleyber Torres.

King can pitch multiple innings and will join Nick Nelson and Jonathan Loaisiga as young right-handed players in the bullpen.

Cashman and Aaron Boone have said there will be talks in the coming days about the last place in the pen, with southpaw Lucas Luetge believing it is a possibility after his strong spring.

Derek Dietrich and Robinson Chirinos have both agreed to stay with the organization after their release and will head to the alternate site in Scranton, with Chirinos in surgical rehabilitation to repair his fractured right wrist.

Jhoulys Chacin, however, asked to be released from his contract to seek employment in the majors. He pitched well for much of the spring, but there was no room for him thanks to the healthy Yankees’ rotation.

Wilson, according to Cashman, “feels good, but still has a few hurdles to jump” before he’s ready to start a game, which is why he will open the season on the IL – although this is backdated, he therefore should not long.

“Physically he feels like he can go there,” Cashman said. “We’re not going to have opening day dictate having him on the list.”
