Yankees substitutes rout Red Sox to win series

So far, this battered and infused Scranton version of the Yankees has had more success against the Red Sox than the usual squad.

They earned a second straight victory over Boston Sunday night in the Bronx, 9-1, and finished the series seven behind the Red Sox, leading the AL East, the closest since June 27.

Jameson Taillon provided 5 ¹ / ₃ scoreless innings and Gleyber Torres came back deep, but they also had good production and a good base with recent calls from Greg Allen and Ryan LaMarre.

With the win, the Yankees also won the series in Boston after losing their first seven games of the season.

Torres, who hadn’t hit a home run since June 5 before scoring in Saturday’s win, hit another to lead the second-low low over left-hander Martin Perez on Sunday, giving the Yankees a 1–1 lead. 0.

In the third, Allen hit left with an out and moved up to third on a single hit-and-run through the left side of the infield by DJ LeMahieu.

With runners in the corners, Giancarlo Stanton sank into a forced withdrawal, scoring Allen in third place to make it 2-0.

Taillon didn’t allow a hit until Xander Bogaerts doubled the left field line with two strikeouts in the fourth. Rafael Devers followed with a four-length march, but Taillon brought out Hunter Renfroe to keep the two-point lead.

The Yankees scored again in the fifth.

Rougned Odor started off with a simple curry and moved up to third on LaMarre’s single on the right. Renfroe’s throw in the third came in time to get Smell, but the ball bounced off Devers for a mistake on Renfroe and LaMarre moved up to second on the play.

Perez has been replaced by former Yankees prospect Garrett Whitlock.

Allen, hitting the left side against right-hander Whitlock, ran with a sacrifice fly to take the lead to 3-0.

JD Martinez scored a single with a putout in the sixth and Bogaerts doubled up to send Martinez in third and end Taillon’s outing.

Chad Green, who throws for the first time since his collapse in Houston last Sunday, allowed Devers to perform a questionable failure. Devers and Boston manager Alex Cora contested the appeal, but there was no expulsion.

Renfroe failed to end the threat.

Green threw a perfect seventh and Odor provided some confidence with a two-run late in the inning.

The Red Sox box collapsed in the seventh, as Darwinzon Hernandez did not strike out any of the four hitters he faced and Brandon Workman scored two runs.

Zack Britton returned from a hamstring injury and walked two in the two-thirds of an inning in his first appearance since June 25.

Lucas Luetge ceded an RBI single to Renfroe before having Jarren Duran knocked out – after another delay as home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez was examined by medics.

LaMarre scored late in the inning.

This has given Aroldis Chapman more room to work, as he tries to recover.

Chapman didn’t stand up with Britton and Luetge struggling with ordering issues.

Instead, it was Luis Cessa.

But Chapman prepared for the ninth and had plenty of time in the long end of the eighth and threw a scoreless ninth – but was wild at times.

The Yankees also lost another outfielder, as Trey Amburgey left with right hamstring cramps, replaced by Brett Gardner.
