Yankees win 10th in a row in heavyweight clash with Braves

ATLANTA – Perfect 10.

The Yankees continued their superb turnaround by beating the Braves, a team that were as hot as they were heading into Monday’s game at Truist Park.

Kicked off by another solid game from Giancarlo Stanton, who clocked a solo homerun and a two-run brace, the Yankees won their 10th in a row, a season-high, with a 5-1 victory.

This is their longest winning streak since last September and it is the first game between two teams with a winning streak of at least nine games since 1901.

With the win, the Yankees moved within four games of the Rays’ first place in LA East and began a nine-game road trip with another strong performance from their pitching staff.

Jordan Montgomery allowed just one run despite walking four in five innings. Jonathan Loaisiga and Wandy Peralta pitched three scoreless innings before Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth in his first appearance as he couldn’t secure a win over Boston on Wednesday.

Chapman returned to form with a perfect round.

It all came against an Atlanta team that, like the Yankees, had won nine in a row and 16 of 18. The Braves were also 10-0 in their previous 10 games against left-handed starters.

Stanton gave the Yankees the lead early in the second with a right-handed homer, his 21st of the season, from right-hander Huascar Ynoa.

Dansby Swanson equalized to open the bottom of the inning with a home run to cross Montgomery, who got some help from Joey Gallo on the left later in the second, when Gallo took a dip near the line to deprive Guillermo Heredia of a potential to double with a.

Montgomery struggled in the fourth quarter, with two straight walks for Adam Duvall and William Contreras.

Following a visit from pitching coach Matt Blake, Montgomery ceded a liner to Heredia, who went straight to Andrew Velazquez short for the inning final.

Velazquez had a double on the right with two strikeouts in the fifth. Ynoa fell behind Montgomery, 3-1, before Montgomery fell while swaying on a 3-2 pitch.

But it didn’t matter, with Stanton in the lineup.

After Ynoa hit DJ LeMahieu with a pitch to start the sixth, Anthony Rizzo lined up in the center and Aaron Judge flew to the right.

Gallo walked over to extend the set and bring in Stanton, who delivered again – this time tearing a brace on the left that scored both runners to make it 3-1.

The Yankees then quickly turned to their enclosure, as Loaisiga replaced Montgomery – taking Stanton’s place in the lineup in the double change, with Brett Gardner entering the game as well.

Loaisiga struck out four batters in two clean innings before Luke Voit pinched him in the eighth after Judge picked and Gallo walked again. A hesitation from Edgar Santana moved the two runners forward before Voit marched to charge goals for Gary Sanchez, who tore a two-run single in the left side of the infield against Jesse Chavez for a 5-1 lead.
