NEW YORK – Another day, another Yankees star from New York will be on the wounded list.

The Yankees announced Friday afternoon that receiver Gary Sanchez will join them, retroactive to Thursday, after being injured left calf this week.

Sanchez will be replaced on the active players list by receiver Kyle Higashioka, who has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. In five minor league games this year, Higashioka averaged .222 (4 vs. 18) with four RBIs.

Austin Romine will be the regular starter in the absence of Sanchez.

The IL relay is a surprise, as Sanchez and his manager, Aaron Boone, have expressed optimism on Wednesday stating that he would begin the first game of the Friday home series against the Chicago White Sox.

After playing Monday's game in Houston, Sanchez was named on Tuesday night and was eliminated from the bench on Wednesday. New York was out of play Thursday.

Boone said he had put Sanchez on the bench Wednesday to try to give him an extra day off before the playoffs this weekend. The manager also said that tests had been done on the Sanchez in Houston after the receiver complained of some tightness after Monday's game.

The timing of the move could not be worse for the Yankees, who were getting a valuable offensive output from Sanchez. In just 11 games, Sanchez has 11 hits – six home runs – and 11 RBIs. He scored three home runs against Baltimore last Sunday – his first win in three in a career game.

Seven of his 11 base wins this season have also been for additional bases.
