Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming animated series, Yasuke. The series premieres April 29.

Created, directed and produced by LeSean Thomas with Japanese animation studio MAPPA, the series includes Judas and the Black Messiah Oscar nominee LaKeith Stanfield, who voices Yasuke and is also an executive producer. The series also includes music by Flying Lotus.

Set in a war-torn feudal Japan that includes fantastical elements, the series tells the story of Yasuke, a boatman who tries to live peacefully after leaving a life marked by violence. When a neighboring village is trapped by warring factions, it is forced to enter the fight.

The clip addresses the racial and socio-economic disparities of the period. “You are not with us… Servants will always be servants. It’s our old-fashioned way, ”Yasuke says. He replies, “Maybe the old way should be left in the past.” It also establishes Yasuke’s ascent to “legendary black samurai” status, evoking a prophecy that a black warrior would one day come to save the people.
