A year ago, Eric Bieniemy looked next to winning a head coach gig and adding another branch to the Andy Reid tree. Surprisingly, he was overwhelmed. It looks like this year would definitely be different.
With an open coach gig left, Bieniemy remains unsigned.
As he did during Super Bowl week last year, Bieniemy has been passed time and time again.
“It is always good to be mentioned and to have the opportunity to make your dreams come true,” he said on Thursday, via Richard Graves, of Sky Sports. “Yeah, I want to be a head coach, but when it’s all said and done, my job is to make sure that I don’t stray from the goals we’re trying to achieve.”
Bieniemy declined to go into more detail on the situation, once again relying on his line that he was simply focusing on the Chiefs’ game plan for Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Bills. from Buffalo.
It doesn’t make sense that a man with Bieniemy’s credentials isn’t a head coach. Super Bowl winner? Check. Train young talents? Check. Credited with creative game planning? Check. Has the support of the players? Check. A well-respected head coach vouches for him? Check.
As this round of recruiting has shown, calling plays isn’t a prerequisite for getting a coaching job – neither Dan Campbell nor Nick Sirianni have called plays – so anyone who uses that as an excuse to explain why Bieniemy doesn’t have his own gig is full of hooey.
