Yoel Romero knew he was not going to become the news yesterday when he left the UFC.
The UFC title challenger on several occasions has been a major topic of conversation in the MMA world since signing with Bellator, a buzz that resumed on Tuesday with the announcement of his game against Anthony Johnson.
The two fan favorites are scheduled to meet on April 16 at Bellator 257, and the fight is part of the Bellator Light Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinal lineup.
Romero (13-5 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) believes the online reaction to the game against Johnson (22-6 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) is a testament to their two careers and how fans will follow favorite fighters. regardless of the promotion that hosts their fights.
“The reaction from the fans will always be the same, it doesn’t depend on which company the fighter is in or where the fighter is fighting, but more on what the athlete has done,” Romero told the reporters during a media availability following the Bellator Tuesday press conference.
“The fans will follow you not because of the company or the league you are in, but because of what the athlete has done. I think the fan reaction is a reflection of the work Anthony and I have had outside of Bellator and even outside of the UFC.
“I have humbly competed since 1997, I fought in Strikeforce, then in the UFC, and now I’m in another big company which is Bellator. I think that’s the reaction of a fan base that has been following you for many years. Obviously the fan base is aware of Anthony Johnson’s legacy, as well as myself.
Romero and Johnson recently joined the Bellator after a long career in the UFC. The two are considered among the best in their divisions, as they both moved away from UFC competition after title shots in their last respective fights.
Romero, who goes from middleweight to light heavyweight, will compete on the same card in which the Bellator light heavyweight title will be defended with champion Vadim Nemkov taking on former defending champion Phil Davis. The Nemkov-Davis rematch will also be part of the grand prix quarter-finals.
