Yoel Romero’s UFC race is over.
Romero and the promotion have separated, his manager, Malki Kawa, confirmed to ESPN on Friday.
Romero still had three fights on his deal, according to sources.
“While we didn’t expect Romero to end like this,” Kawa told ESPN, “we are grateful for the opportunities. [UFC president] Dana White, [general counsel] Hunter Campbell and [matchmaker] Mick Maynard has given it to him over the years. He’s now ready to move on and resume his career, and we’re already talking about more promotions right now. “
Romero’s most recent fight was a loss to middleweight champion Israel Adesanya by unanimous decision in March. Romero and Adesanya both received criticism after the fight for not living up to expectations.
Romero, 43, won a silver medal in freestyle wrestling at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He made his UFC debut in 2013, winning his first eight consecutive fights.
He fought for the interim or undisputed middleweight title four times but never won. He left the promotion as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history never to win a title.
