Remember when the idea of having a terabyte of storage left you speechless.
Now they pack a terabyte on a map the size of your pink nail.
News that would have made the head of my adolescence, SanDisk now sells a 1 terabyte version of its $ 450 Extreme microSD card family. The company first talked about these cards at the Mobile World Congress in February, but it is now that it hits the shelves. As Tom's Guide has noticed, it's available on the SanDisk website as early as this morning.
Read speeds are limited to 90 MB / s, while writing speeds are limited to 60 MB / s. SanDisk includes a product page stating that a faster ExtremePro card (170 MB / s read, 90 MB / s write) is on the way, but they give no indication as to when.
Once upon a time, the idea of (much less needed) a terabyte on something that fits in a small slot on a device in your pocket seemed funny. Then came the 4K video, portable devices that can record in 4K and an ever-growing library of games with absolutely massive textures. Filling a terabyte is not quite the challenge it was.
For anyone reading this in 2099 and having fun with our astonishment to bury a terabyte of storage on a map of this size while you have a copy of each film recorded in a strand of hair Scram. If you'll excuse me, I'm having a nightmare: losing a penny-sized card with a terabyte of data.
