In an interview in 2005, Everyone loves Raymond Star Doris Roberts has spoken about her work on the show in all its facets.
Although she expressed great pride and admiration for her work, she was honest about her working relationship with comedy creator and executive producer Phil Rosenthal.
Her respect for him was unquestionable; however, she was frank in expressing her dismay at his particular way of treating actors.
Doris Roberts’ Favorite Episodes From “ Everybody Loves Raymond ”
In a 2005 interview with the Archives of American Television, Doris Roberts, who died in 2016, shared her favorite episodes of the now classic sitcom in which she starred for nine seasons as the matriarch of the Barone family, Marie Barone.
The first episode she described as favorite is the one in which Marie finds her teenage son Raymond’s diary.
“I loved ‘Ray’s Diary,’ said Roberts. “I thought it had many levels of tenderness and pathos, sensitivity and humor. I liked that one a lot, a lot.
Another episode that was dear to the veteran actor was “Frank’s Tribute,” “the one with Peter [Boyle], cleaning the cold cream off my face, ”said Roberts.
In “Frank’s Tribute,” Ray and Robert create a video honoring their father, Frank, for his dressing room and do a poor job. Frank is furious.
At the end of the episode, Marie wants to know why her husband is so upset. Frank doesn’t have much to say and Marie stops trying to figure it out for the night, putting cold cream on her face before going to bed. The episode shows a tender side to the normally abrasive Frank as he lovingly wipes the cold cream off his wife’s face.

During his interview with the US Television Archives, Roberts was asked if the show’s creator and executive producer, Phil Rosenthal, was very “practical.”
“It is very practical, very practical. If it was written: “Raymond, are you hungry? and I said, ‘Are you hungry, Raymond?’ [Rosenthal] shouted “Stop!” in front of an audience, in front of everyone.
“Which I, and all of my fellow actors, found horrible.

Roberts made it clear in his remarks that Rosenthal was extremely talented as a writer and showrunner.
“He’s brilliant at what he does, brilliant,” she said. “He’s a great showrunner, he knows exactly what you need and how to get it. Towards the end it got better, but you can’t do that to actors.
Roberts developed his point, saying that Rosenthal’s jarring controls can shut down an actor.
“You have to be free, that you do it well, that you can change it if you want to. But don’t yell, “Stop!” Everyone in the audience is shocked by this, ”she said.
“So it went on for several years, then it stopped and I finally stopped it. It’s just his technique of talking to actors that needs to be changed.
