New Yorkers who are already receiving unemployment benefits do not need to call the state Department of Labor to get the additional $ 300 approved by the federal government at the end of December.
The extra money and two extended federal programs will begin Sunday, the earliest date authorized by the federal government.
People who already participate in a program should continue to certify every week as usual and they will automatically receive extended benefits, according to the labor department.
Congress approved the additional relief in the last week of December, after the last set of additional benefits expired. States have had little time to adjust and deliver money to millions of unemployed people without missing a check.
New York State was ready. Unemployment checks in New York State will not jump a week.
The labor department’s phone lines are filling up with calls wanting to know what they need to do to qualify for extended programs. This means that people who really need to resolve a problem with their complaints cannot get an answer.
Read this instead of calling:
Anyone who already has unemployment insurance of some kind will receive an additional $ 300 per week for 11 weeks, from January 3 to March 14. This means that people who receive benefits from one of the Alphabetical Soup programs will receive this additional money. All they have to do is certify weekly as usual.
There are three federal programs that extend benefits beyond the state’s typical 26 weeks. Two of those programs expired on December 26 and have now been extended. The third remained in place.
One of these programs is particularly important in the New York economy of on-demand workers. Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, or PUA, goes to self-employed workers who are not normally eligible for unemployment benefits. This program now pays benefits for 57 weeks. People who qualified before March 14 will continue to claim benefits until they reach the maximum number of weeks or reach the week starting April 5.
PUA recipients simply need to continue to certify as usual every week to receive the extended benefits. As of January 31, the federal government will require additional proof of eligibility. The state labor department will contact people who need to provide more paperwork.
The Pandemic Unemployment Compensation Program, or PEUC, is for people who have exhausted the usual 26 weeks of state unemployment insurance. In 2020, there was a 13 week limit for the PEUC. This has now been extended to 24 weeks. Like the other program, people who qualified before March 14 will continue to claim benefits until they reach the maximum number of weeks or reach the week that begins April 5.
There is a third program called Extended Benefits. This is an old program that provides an additional 20 weeks in states with high unemployment. New York now qualifies for this program.
People who had exhausted their 26 weeks of public insurance and 13 weeks of PEUC in 2020 were enrolled in this third program.
When these extended benefits are exhausted, the state labor department will automatically transfer people to the PEUC program. Again, there is no need to call.
People who need to apply for unemployment insurance for the first time can do so online.
People who have reached the end of their benefit year, 52 weeks after submitting a claim, will need to reapply. It can also be done online.
