U.S. Representative-elect Young Kim, who defeated outgoing Democratic Representative Gil Cisneros in conservative-leaning Orange County in California, thanked supporters and called for unity on Saturday.

Kim, 58, from South Korea who emigrated to the United States as a child with her family, will become one of the first Korean-American women to sit in Congress. She handed the state’s 39th district back to Republicans after Cisneros toppled the normally Republican district in the 2018 “blue wave”.
Cisneros praised Kim after the close race was called in his favor on Friday and in her post she congratulated him on a “hard fought race” and thanked him for his military service.

Kim said she looks forward to working with Republicans and Democrats “to work towards a better future for our community, our state and our nation.”
She also spoke about her experience as an immigrant.
“America is a country where an immigrant girl from South Korea can become a representative in the United States Congress and I will work to continue to keep this promise alive,” she said. “Thank you, thank you for your confidence in me and let’s get to work for the 39th arrondissement.
Kim is a former member of the State Assembly and previously worked for former Rep. Ed Royce, the Republican who stepped down from his seat before Cisneros returned him. Kim lost to Cisneros in 2018.

Kim has campaigned on healthcare, immigration reform, lowering business regulations and homelessness, according to the Orange County registry.
