Atlanta mutant rap star Young Thug has been a prolific mixtape force for a solid decade, but he only ranked one of his releases, the 2019 hit. So funny, like a straight studio album. So it’s remarkable that Thug is now making another album – his second, at least according to him – and calling it Punk. (He first announced this album title in 2019.) Thug started out as a stimulating, boundary-pushing presence, and he now seems to consider himself a rock star. Paradoxically, an album entitled Punk seems like the most backward thing Young Thug can do, especially since it looks like Travis Barker will be involved.
In a new edition of NPR Small office concerts series, Thug debuted four of the songs that will appear on Punk. In the video, he performs in a beautifully manicured Los Angeles backyard. He is backed by Damnage Gooods, a live band that appear to be made up entirely of studio musicians from LA. The video opens with Thug telling a poignant story of family conflict. But the next four songs – “Die Slow”, “Droppin Jewels”, “Hate The Game” and “Tick Tock” – are all pretty generic by Thug’s own standards.
But it is the end of the video that is of most concern. With Travis Barker sitting down, Thug makes a tasteless rock version of “Ski,” a single that appeared on his recent label compilation. Slime 2 language. That sucks, and it suggests that Thug might be on the right track to creating his own version of Lil Wayne’s notoriously trashy 2010 rap-rock album. Renaissance.
