YouTube asks premium users about preferred feature

YouTube Premium – formerly “red” – has remained relatively unchanged in recent years. Google is now asking YouTube app subscribers about their preferred premium feature.

The main YouTube app today features a fairly prominent post just above the bottom bar asking, “What’s your favorite YouTube Premium feature?” Pressing drags a sheet with five options. You can only select one:

  • Without advertising
  • Original series and films
  • Offline Videos
  • Background game
  • Premium Music app experience

The ability to watch ad-free videos dates back to when the service was called YouTube Red. This perk, under its predecessor “Music Key,” was only used for songs, but Google significantly expanded the reach in a 2015 redesign. It also helps content creators.

In terms of original programming, Google has moved from premium TV to offering more content from YouTube creators. Offline playback is useful for those with poor connectivity, while background playback lets you simply listen to the audio of the videos. Finally, Google promotes the premium YouTube Music experience.

The various short-term promotions that offer Nest Mini and Stadia speakers are not mentioned.

The subscription doesn’t necessarily need a revamp, but there has been a long-standing demand for it to be linked with YouTube TV. In October, Google revealed that it had 30 million paid Music / Premium subscribers.
