YouTube is launching a new feature to deter angry or hostile commenters from making offensive remarks with a quick prompt that goes off before the insult is posted, asking them to reconsider and change their comment. The plan is described in a blog post published today.
Additionally, YouTube will now have a filter on comments that have been held up for review. The creator will be able to automatically hide, approve or flag messages without having to read the content of a hateful or threatening message.

Users who are about to post offensive content will receive a pop-up window before the comment can be posted, suggesting they stop and edit their post. The user can still press “post anyway” to submit their comment, but the idea is that they have one second to reconsider their option. This is in line with steps other social media platforms have taken recently, but it is unclear how effective this very mild deterrent is.
Android users using the English language will see the new prompts starting today; it is not known when or if this feature will be rolled out to other platforms and languages.
YouTube says it has stepped up its internal efforts against hate speech, increasing the number of daily hate comment deletions 46 times since early 2021. YouTube terminated 1.8 million channels in the last quarter, including more than 54,000 of these closures occurred for hate speech.
The company also plans to release a new survey in 2021 that will ask creators to voluntarily share information about their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender, with the aim of using that data to examine how the content of different groups is processed in its internal system. systems.
