Android font speculated that this might be an attempt to discourage device makers from bypassing its application via a browser. However, it could also be simply to move the resources of the business as the web version becomes less and less necessary. Many people now have access to smart TVs, consoles and multimedia hubs with a largely identical interface. In these cases, the web version is redundant. This could help YouTube put more effort into native apps.
