YouTube just announced that, “in response to comments from creators on wellness and targeted disgust campaigns,” the site is testing new designs that “don’t show the audience’s dislikes count.”

While this isn’t a definitive site-wide change for everyone, it does show that YouTube is at least considering the move and is currently testing “a few new models” – one of which is pictured here. – for a small number of users. as part of an “experiment”.

YouTube’s “dislike” button, and the very public way its tally could be used against a video, is a strange thing! Sometimes this can be a way for fans to make their displeasure known to something, like a Call of Duty trailer that at one point was the second most hated video in YouTube history. Other times, however, it can be a way for morons to harass the creators.

When the site says it uses “designer wellness reviews and targeted anti-aversion campaigns” as the basis for this potential change, I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether they were pushed into action by “little YouTubers attacked by hate mobs” or “huge corporations unhappy with negative public relations.”

While the “Dislike” button itself would remain, only the video’s downloader would be able to see how many times it had been selected by checking the metrics on its YouTube Studio page.
