YouTube is currently down due to a widespread outage

Although it is relatively rare for Google services to go offline, sometimes the phenomenon does occur. YouTube and YouTube TV (in US) are currently down, videos are not playing.

This widespread problem started around 4 p.m. PT with YouTube on Twitter confirming the problem. The company is “aware of the problem and is working on a fix”. Given the timing, the blackout is particularly felt in the United States.

YouTube on all platforms is currently accessible, but users cannot play videos. Initially, the thumbnail image would appear on mobile, but would be accompanied by a continuous loading progress indicator. Later in the failure, an error message appears. Video search still works, but there is a slight delay before everything loads.

A similar problem is plaguing YouTube TV, which is only available in the United States. The YouTube Music app doesn’t seem to be affected, but the streaming service won’t load on smart screens, speakers, or other Assistant-enabled devices.

Google TV, formerly Play Movies & TV, is also offline, suggesting an issue with the company’s video capabilities. As such, users cannot watch rented or purchased content.

The Play Store is also affected. Android apps are being downloaded, but the installation process will not complete.

No other Google product appears to be down tonight, suggesting an outage limited to a specific part of the company’s video streaming infrastructure.
