YouTube is introducing clipping – the ability to create short snippets of live streams or videos – starting today with a small group of creators. These clips can be between five and 60 seconds in length and will be associated with a new URL. Creators and viewers will be able to create clips by clicking the clip icon, although the functionality is currently limited to desktop and Android devices.
This is a smart move by YouTube, as slicing is a standard in the live streaming industry. You can more easily share live video content via a short video clip that can be streamed to social media, rather than requiring viewers to browse a feed potentially lasting several hours. Every platform, from Twitch to the dearly defunct Mixer site, has decided that this is something their creators need.
Today we are launching an experimental version of Clips on YouTube. Watch the videos on the Creator Insider Channel and try it out for yourself!
Clips are 5- to 60-second shareable content segments (Live / VOD) that lie on top of the original video.

YouTube’s addition of this feature is just another signal that the online video titan intends to step up its live streaming operation. As is generally accepted in streamer spaces, clips help channels grow. A good clip that goes viral can attract a huge influx of new viewers – and streaming, where visibility is a big part of creating a sustainable income, it’s half the battle.
