If you have used your phone before to listen to music on Youtube and I wish the tunes would keep turning as you cruise to other apps, then you know how thrilled Canadian YouTube users are likely to be when they discover that exact joy soon. And hopefully it’s a sign that it’s happening for the rest of us.
In an October 4 blog post, Google, owner of YouTube, has announced that free background listening will soon begin rolling out to Canadian users of the YouTube Music app.
“Every new YouTube Music update starts with listening to people, and we’ve heard you loud and clear: keep playing music,” Google wrote.
Available November 3, the new feature will allow Canadian users to enjoy “radio-like listening with your screen off,” according to the announcement, which means any media from the YouTube Music app will continue to play without interruption, even while you are using your phone to do other things or turn off the screen.
While free background listening has long been a standard fare than competitors like Pandora, Spotify, and Tidal offered users, until now only those who were subscribed to YouTube’s premium level could access the feature. Although it was not immediately clear when listeners in other countries could expect to see the new feature on their own YouTube Music apps (the Google blog simply notes that users should “stay tuned for for additional information and expansion plans “), it’s safe to assume that YouTube will bring the feature to a wider audience soon in hopes of competing with their music-focused rivals.
G / O Media may earn a commission
While it may seem at first glance to be the decision to expand access to free background listening, YouTube Premium still has many advantages: In addition to ad-free listening, users can also download videos. videos for free online or offline, and can also easily switch between regular audio and music videos.
The news comes weeks after YouTube’s success forced shutdown several very popular Discord music bots, much to the dismay of the dedicated user communities who had used them to power their servers’ background playlists.
