YouTube Music Subtly Changes Dark Theme On Android And The Web

The overall look of YouTube Music has largely remained the same since its relaunch in 2018, but a small change online and on Android sees Google tweaking the background theme.

Unlike other Google apps, YouTube Music started out with a dark theme and has no light equivalent. This nocturnal appearance mainly uses a black background, but a lighter gray is also used. This includes the three lower tabs, the mini player, and the app bar.

This last item is now also black, with the Android status bar following accordingly. This is particularly evident in the Library tab and serves to visually distinguish the gray “Recent Activity” carousel from the list below.

Meanwhile, this translates to the Explore tab, along with the Search and Album / Playlist pages, merging at the top of the screen with the system UI. It’s a little tweak that allows for a very unified and cohesive experience.

As noticed on Reddit, this change has happened over the last few days following a server side update. It was not yet live in December, while the refreshed look is also available on the web client.

Some have speculated that it could be a forerunner of YouTube Music to get a lightweight theme that makes the customer more compliant and matched with all other proprietary apps. This change makes it easier to reverse the interface.
