YouTube has suspended the One America News Network (OANN) channel for repeated violations of the video platform’s policy on sharing false information on COVID-19, YouTube confirmed on Tuesday. The channel was also demonetized following the suspension, YouTube added.
“Since the start of this pandemic, we have worked to prevent the spread of harmful disinformation associated with COVID-19 on YouTube. After careful consideration, we removed an OANN video and issued a channel warning for violating our misinformation on COVID-19. policy, which bans content claiming there is a guaranteed cure, ”YouTube said in a statement. “Additionally, due to repeated violations of our COVID-19 disinformation policy and other channel monetization policies, we have suspended the YouTube Partner Program channel and, therefore, its monetization on YouTube.”
YouTube follows a three-warning policy before deleting an account. OANN’s channel is still live, but the warning means that it cannot upload new videos or start new live broadcasts for a week. To make money on videos in the future, OANN will need to reapply to the YouTube Partner Program. Readmission to the program will require the account to correct any issues that led to the suspension.
OANN has recently become one of President Donald Trump’s favorites. The president has repeatedly promoted segments of the network promoting unfounded conspiracy theories on electoral fraud and the rigging of the voting machine in the presidential election.
YouTube does not have a policy against making false statements about the election. The platform previously refuse to remove a video from OANN falsely claiming Mr. Trump won the 2020 election. The video was uploaded the day after the election, before an official news source made a report. projection. CBS News screened Joe Biden as the winner on November 7.
YouTube initially added a box below the video stating that the election results were not final and included a link to a Google search for the vote tally. On November 7, YouTube updated the box to indicate that the Associated Press had declared Biden the winner of the election.
OANN made headlines earlier in the year when the White House Correspondents Association removed the network from the daily rotation of the White House briefing after one of the media’s employees was twice attended briefings outside of their tour. The employee, Chanel Rion, continued to attend briefings as a guest of the White House.
