YouTube TV is now YT TV on Android, Google TV tweak icon

A minor update to YouTube TV for Android allows Google to change the name of the app to “YT TV”. In addition, the icon of the Android / Google TV app has also been slightly changed.

Update 01/19/21: Google rolled back its December reversal with version 5.01.2. Widely deployed through the Play Store today, the app is once again listed as “YT TV”. It is clear that end users prefer the application name shortened.

Update 12/2: Version 4.48.2 is being rolled out through the Play Store today and is reverting the home screen name to “YouTube TV” full. We don’t know why Google gave up “YT TV” after almost two months. As such, the drawer position has returned and YT Music is the last app again.

Original 10/5: Version 4.40 for Android (phones and tablets) sees the name of the application change from “YouTube TV” at “YT TV”. This change is reflected on the home screens and app launchers, but not on the app info page or the Play Store listing.

The abbreviation stands for “YT Music” and sees “YT TV” move to the right of the audio streaming application. For most people, YouTube TV is now the last item in their alphabetically listed app drawer, although that can cause problems when searching based on your device’s launcher.

Depending on the font size you set, “YouTube TV” may have already been truncated to “YouTube…”. Today’s change means this is no longer the case for most users, if not for all. This new version is still being rolled out via the Play Store.

Meanwhile, on the Android TV / Google TV front, another update sees the YouTube TV app map change. It used to be the red YouTube play button followed by “TV” on a white background. This is also how in-app branding appears.

It is now the icon and “YouTube TV” behind a black card, both extending from edge to edge. The background change sets it apart from YouTube and the YouTube Music shortcut. One upside is that it stands out in the app carousel, although Chromecast users with Google TV still have access to it in the new “Live” tab.

There is now also a red tint / glow when selected. This change should be widely deployed today.
