YouTube influencer Kevin Paffrath could become California’s youngest governor to date.
Paffrath, a 29-year-old man who has made millions of dollars on his YouTube channel ‘Meet Kevin’, topped a recent SurveyUSA poll of respondents planning to vote in the governor’s recall election Gavin Newsom next month.
The survey shows that Paffrath leads 46 candidates, including conservative talk show host Larry Elder and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, with 27% of the vote.
Paffrath’s share of the poll was followed by six Republican candidates, including Elder, who came in second with 24%. The 29-year-old is one of nine Democrats working to topple Newsom.
In the tally, 51% of the 613 likely voters polled August 2-4 said they would vote in favor of Newsom’s ouster. The Democratic Party is urging voters to vote against a recall, as well as to skip the second question on the ballot, which asks voters to choose a replacement in the event of a recall. But if more than half of California voters support the recall of the ballots on September 14, the next governor will be one of the 46 candidates with the most votes.
An earlier poll by the University of California, Berkeley and the Los Angeles Times in July had just 36% in favor of a recall with 51% of voters registered against.
“We believe that during the last two weeks of this campaign, if the recall seems increasingly likely, the Democratic Party will be forced to choose a backup candidate for Hail Mary,” Paffrath said at an event. Newsom press in San Francisco. “Since we’re No. 1 in the polls, we hope that’s us.”

Paffrath says he voted for Joe Biden in the presidential elections and identifies as centrist. He followed Newsom in his “Vote No” election campaign which began in San Francisco last week.
The recall effort has been in the works for several years, but gained momentum during COVID-19 amid concerns about state closures and the gradual reopening of the state. Several prominent public figures joined the call to get Newsom to step down during the year, including billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya, who highlighted the flight of big companies like Tesla and Oracle from the state.
Paffrath says he plans to address concerns about high taxes, as well as address issues related to high levels of roaming in cities like San Francisco. The 29-year-old’s tax plan would allow people to avoid income tax on their first $ 250,000. He also plans to make COVID-19 security measures optional and says he will take homeless people off the streets during his first 60 days in office.
