Yubico has announced a new line of security keys that allow you to unlock accounts with a fingerprint. With older YubiKeys, logging in requires entering a PIN code and then pressing the key, but the newer version can authenticate by simply pressing (although the option to enter a PIN code is still available if you wear gloves or if your fingers are wet). Convenience comes at a price: the USB-A version of the YubiKey Bio costs $ 80 and the USB-C version costs $ 85.
The YubiKey Bio series acts like an ordinary security key, so it can help you log into the services without having to manage passwords or act as a second factor in addition to something like a password or code authentication of your phone. Either style of use can help you avoid phishing attacks, and the YubiKey Bio can be used with a wide range of apps and services, including 1Password, Google Chrome, Microsoft accounts, Twitter , etc.
In technical terms, it supports FIDO Universal Second Factor and FIDO2 / WebAuthn, so anything that supports these standards should be compatible. Yubico says, however, that its Bio Keys currently do not support OTP or Smart Card standards.
It should be noted that Bio Keys also do not support NFC. The iPhone can therefore consider other options to avoid carrying a USB dongle to Lightning. Yubico offers its 5C NFC key for $ 55, although it doesn’t support bio-authentication. Google also offers a USB-C / NFC dongle for $ 35, although it’s currently out of stock. However, for those who want a security key that allows them to log in with a fingerprint, the YubiKeys are widely regarded, and now there is an even more convenient option.
