When Zach harrison Arrived in the state of Ohio, there were great expectations for the Lewis Center, native of Ohio. Not only did he grow up in the shadow of Ohio stadium, but Harrison was a five-star prospect and the nation’s second-largest defensive end in his class, a player the Buckeyes must have had.

In his first two years, Harrison showed his potential at times, but is not yet the constant defensive threat he was meant to be. But those around the Scarlet and Gray program believe that will change in 2021.

Discussions around Harrison this offseason have been nothing but positive, with the coaching staff and the player discussing a shift in mindset where he is fully committed to football and the program.

“It’s not something tangible,” Harrison said this fall camp. “It’s not something I can really put my finger on. One day after last season I was like, ‘This is your third year. Potentially, you could leave after this year. Why don’t you give everything to the program? That’s what (strength trainer Mickey Marotti) always says: If you buy 100 percent, the program will do great things for you. So I was like, “Why not join and go 100%? And so far, that has only been a blessing.

This was reflected when Harrison was selected as one of the Ohio State representatives at the Big Ten Media Days, and then again when Harrison was named one of Buckeye’s six captains, alongside wide receivers Chris Olave and Kamryn babb, offensive lineman Thayer Munford, defensive tackle Haskell Garrett and linebacker Teradja mitchell.

The Ohio State social media team posted a video of the defensive line coach on Tuesday. Larry johnson call Harrison’s parents, Tracey and Jimmie, to let them know the good news. Being from Columbus, it was clear how excited Harrison’s parents were to learn that their son was a Buckeye captain.

Johnson: I just want to share some news with you today. Some good news. One of the things we talked about when Zach was in first year was having the opportunity to do something really special at Ohio State University. And today, his teammates picked him as the 2021 Buckeyes’ football captain. How exciting is that?

Tracey and Jimmie: *Indistinguishable celebration *

Johnson: It’s pretty exciting. He’s standing here, but I thought I would call you. Do you remember the day we met about all of his goals and expectations? You remember it?

Tracey: Yeah, yeah.

Johnson: So here we are. We’re on our feet, confirmation of what we’ve been talking about, our new Buckeyes captain.

Tracey: Well, congratulations, young man.

Zach: Thanks. Thank you. Thank you.

Tracey: It’s a huge responsibility.

Zach: I know. I’m excited.

Tracey: I’m excited for you.

Zach: Thanks. Thank you.
