FRISCO, Texas – Finally, the showdown is over.
The Cowboys agreed to extend Ezekiel Elliott's contract, ending a 40-day hold period just in time for the start of the regular season.
Following a lengthy conversation, both parties agreed on an extension of $ 90 million, a six-year, $ 50 million guarantee, a contract to keep Elliott in the Cowboys uniform until the end of his career in the NFL.
It's a whole resolution of a scenario that has been built with uncertainty from the very beginning. There is a life, in mid-July, there were conflicting reports about whether Elliott would hold or not. At the start of his fourth season in the NFL, he was widely regarded as one of the best defensemen in the league – not to mention one of his underpaid.
On July 25, the contract dispute crystallized, as Elliott missed the Cowboys' first flight to Oxnard, California, for training camp. He did not report to the Veterans' deadline the next day, and the stalemate was unfolding.
"He's late," said Jerry Jones, owner / CEO of the Cowboys at the time. "We have officially reported, so it's a non-report, officially."
Elliott's non-report lasted until August, bringing a lot of twists and turns. The Cowboys and Elliott representatives took turns in the media throughout the training camp, whether it was the report that the Cowboys offered Elliott the "best of both", or Elliott's reaction at the famous "Zeke Who?" joke from Jones.
Finally, four days before the opening of Sunday's season against the Giants of New York, everything seems settled. Elliott returned to the Dallas area from his off-season base in Cabo on Tuesday morning, conversations broke off late Tuesday night and an agreement was reached on Wednesday morning.
Now the question is: how fast can it be ready?
According to all the clues, it was a big problem for the Cowboys to find their star in the star on Wednesday, as they began to prepare seriously for Sunday's game against the Giants.
Predictably, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett did not want to focus on Elliott at his Monday press conference. But he admitted, however, that when Elliott shows up, he probably would not need a lot of time to get into the offense.
"Zeke is as capable as anyone," Garrett said. "He is an experienced player, a very good player for us, he knows our football system. I do not think they will learn a lot there. He's a smart guy, an instinctive guy. But again, it's an assumption "
It's not a hypothetical anymore. Elliott became the Cowboys running back for 2019 – and for a few more years.
