Zendaya has been in the public eye as a performer since she was a teenager, which she says is the reason people find it hard to see her in more adult roles.

The 24-year-old won her first Emmy last year playing a struggling high school student Rue Bennett on HBO’s Euphoria, and she plays the younger girlfriend of John David Washington, 36, in Malcolm & Marie, doing debuting on Netflix on February 5.

The actress spoke about the 12-year age gap between herself and her co-star in a new interview with E !, stating that she believed the controversy was due to “ I played a teenager 16 years since I was 16 ”.

“ You also have to remember that people grew up with me when I was a kid, it’s like watching, I guess, your younger brother now, you know, they’ve grown up … ” she adds.

“So it’s hard for people to understand the idea that I grew up in real life. You know, even though I still play a teenage girl on TV, ”she said of her role as Rue.

Her two roles as Rue and Marie come from writer-director Sam Levinson, who created Euphoria and wrote and directed Malcolm & Marie.

The film was shot during the COVID-19 lockdown this summer, with only Zendaya and Washington making up the cast with minimal crew.

“Sometimes when you don’t see the roles you want, sometimes you have to participate in their creation. So I’m grateful to Sam for writing this movie for us, ”Zendaya added.

She also said the safety of the cast and crew in the film was their ‘number one concern’, which they achieved by creating a ‘bubble’ type environment.

“The thing is, I am. And to some extent I’m grateful for it. This is where I started and I learned a lot from this experience, ”she added.

“ It’s just kind of a slow progression, and I’m glad it all was to prove it to myself and no one else, you know? I kiss her a little. It’s part of my heritage to a certain extent, ”Zendaya said.

She is also set to film the second season of Euphoria at some point this year, although it is not known when the season will debut on HBO.
