A recovered Zim can only benefit the economy of SA – The Citizen

More jobs and more trade – this is the promise for South Africa's election results in Zimbabwe. But whatever happens, do not expect a massive exodus of Zimbabwean nationals returning from South Africa.

Steven Gruzd, head of the governance and diplomacy program at the SA's Institute of International Affairs in Johannesburg, said the two economies were closely linked since the colonial era.

"The retail sector in Zimbabwe is importing thousands of products every day from South Africa," he said. "Many South African companies – in retail, mining, services – are operating in Zimbabwe and are struggling to repatriate their profits due to the crisis of currency shortages."

"If Zimbabwe recovers, it will create jobs in South Africa." Zimbabwe, when it regains international support, could modernize its manufacturing sector fairly quickly – many of these partners are South African. "

Zimbabwe is one of South Africa's largest trading partners and hundreds of thousands of its citizens living in South Africa.

"We can only benefit from Zimbabwe's economic recovery," said Gruzd.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa, leader of the Alliance for Democratic Change, promise profound changes, but whoever wins faces a daunting task of rebuilding the economically depressed country.

Whoever wins, it is unlikely that there will be an immediate mass exodus of immigrants living in South Africa returning home.

"[Zimbabwe nationals] have their lives here, it's hard to uproot them overnight," said Gruzd. "Some may go back, but many will not."
